		<description>
	LANDBOUWBELANG

Collective history
After thirty years of vacancy Landbouwbelang was squatted in 2002 and since that time has been built up towards an institute for alternative culture in Maastricht.

 These days Landbouwbelang’s ensemble of buildings has come to represent a collective history of Maastricht which reaches further than&#38;nbsp; the squat of the past twenty years. The site and its buildings show how the squatters community has granted a function to the vacant industrial monument. In addition, it shows that the place has been used as a cargo location of the original agricultural cooperation Landbouwbelang for years. It shows that the northern part belonged to the paper factory. Moreover, it shows how Landbouwbelang was positioned on an island between the river Maas and the canal Luik-Maastricht, with the lock-keepers houses as relics of that time.

Underneath all of these histories, we find historical layers which are not directly tangible. For five hundred years, this place housed the Sint-Antonietenklooster, situated right&#38;nbsp; on the edge of Maastricht against the city wall.

The squatting, the industrial activity and the monastic life which took place at the Landbouwbelang site all have in common that they deviated from the surrounding life at that time. In the very centre of the urban tissue of Maastricht, the Landbouwbelang site has always been a bastion that accommodated a tradition of subculture. It represents an alternative way of living that is in contrast with the Leitkultur: `het sjiek en sjoen’. It is an anomaly in Maastricht, but not ‘just’ a certain anomaly.

Redevelopment
The current tender leaves no room to maintain the embodied variegation of the site in the future. In the tender, the building ensemble is placed within a financial logic of a larger area development. Thereby it is depriving the location of her autonomy and in turn is neglecting her unique role in the city. The financial conditions dictate a redevelopment that in practice can only been found in a very voluminous and pragmatic housing programme. Market conformity will be leading, thereby irrevocably ending this piece of collective history.

Alternative future
The imminent redevelopment motivates this design of an alternative future. In this project I value the existing buildings and the history they entail. And I draw parallels between the existing use and the historical uses on site. Next to the current use of Landbouwbelang and the rooted value this has for an alternative culture in Maastricht, the parallel with history makes apparent how the current subcultural identity is engrained in the history of the site. At this crossroads for the site of Landbouwbelang, but also at this crossroads for Maastricht, this design shows a way to make the development of Landbouwbelang an acknowledgement of the value of the existing city and its histories.

In the design I reuse large parts of the existing buildings to both expand on existing programme and add new functions. By making interventions to the primarily concrete casco, I intensify existing functions and add special housing conditions. These are housing conditions of a collective nature that mirror the history of both the life in the squatting community and the monastery. In this way, a future is created where preservation and new construction are interwoven to show the layered history of this site, while making space for contemporary users to add a new layer. A new layer that respects the tradition of subculture as a contrasting addition to the city centre of Maastricht.

		<description>
	LAWCOURT AMSTERDAM-NOORD

The judicial system knows certain dualities. It is on the one hand a punishing body that serves the law, but on the other hand it protects people from the power of the state. It is on the one hand very formalistic and hierarchical, but not the other hand it tries to stand firmly within society and have a humanistic approach. This duality that is inherent in the judicial system and thus the judge, is the concept for the new district courthouse in Amsterdam North.

This is translated to an ensemble of three buildings that reopens viewing axes around the building, that way connecting the surrounding neighbourhoods. The buildings itself know a formal gridded exterior facade, which is load bearing. On the interior two softer, informal forms carry the centre. In this the duality of the judicial system is brought into a duality between a formal exterior and more informal interior.

The three buildings come together by combining an interaction zone that is draped around the buildings to soften the transition between the exterior and the interior. In the central atrium the construction of this interaction zone shows how the three buildings fuse together.

The duality between formal and informal is also brought into the set up of the courtroom. Here the court table has a formal, hierarchical axis. This axis creates a more distant and traditional set up of the courtroom. But the judge can also choose for an off-centred relation to the defendant. This axis brings the actors closer and provides for a more informal and humanistic relation. With this duality in the courtroom the judge can choose itself if a case benefits from a more hierarchical approach or a more human-centred approach.

In the elevations the duality takes cues from an ancient figure: Janus. The god of transitions, doorways and duality. In the build up of the building the formal exterior and informal interior create a two facedness on in the facade. This duality of two facedness has a representation within the window infill, in which a rounded panel is counterbalanced with a straight panel. This balance is then counteracted on the interior side of the window infill. It shows how there is always two sides to the stories that come in front of the judge.

By setting up a building that engrains the duality of the judicial system from the facade to the courtroom, a courthouse is created that shows the balancing act that is omnipresent in the work of the judge. It shows how this act is in good hands within in a building that shows there is a balance in our judicial system. A balance that benefits a democracy that is guided by its constitution. &#38;nbsp;

	ZUIDAS REPURPOSED

“For an extremely hungry man, utopia can be described as a place where there is plenty of food.” - A.H. Maslow

Rising sea levels are threatening communities worldwide. But in the Netherlands we deem ourselves to be untouchable by this. We, the Dutch people, have risen from the sea. We know how to defend ourselves. But with the ongoing climate change and sea level rise that comes with it, the intensity of rising water is unprecedented. In these times even we have to start thinking about the question of the rising sea. Luckily our research in rising sea levels can still be captured in ‘what if’ scenarios.

What if the sea level rises six meter, we stop protecting our coast and let the water come in.

The whole West and Northwest of the Netherlands will be submerged. Half of our most critical land will be lost. Our agricultural land that has sustained us for ages and from which we have been able to grow as a trading economy will become worthless. It will create one of the most basic challenges; feeding the population with half the land of before. Half the surface area of the country on which the whole population has to live, work, recreate, move and to produce food. Immense pressure on a tiny sliver of land.

By repurposing the submerged built tissue in the ‘sunken’ land, the pressure is relieved from the remaining higher grounds. The agricultural land is lost in the West part of the Netherlands, but the buildings stick out above the sea. Only the first two floors will be lost to the water, all the other floors can still be used.

A place in which a lot of floorspace is concentrated that will pierce out of the water is at the Zuidas in Amsterdam. Floorspace&#38;nbsp; here is currently mainly office space. The typical plan for offices has ideal characteristics for vertical agriculture. They are open, flexible, efficient and deep; characteristics that lends the floorspace for repurposing into vertical agriculture. This proposal envisions how the repurposing of both the built tissue will look like, but also how the new conditions in the landscape and public space will change the Zuidas. A change from a business district towards an unusual combination of business, agriculture and nature; the first Central Agriculture District in the world.

		<description>
	PEOPLE’S UNIVERSITY BERLIN

At the edge of Westhafen in Berlin lies the&#38;nbsp; PUSUDD. The People’s University for Sustainable Urban Dwelling and Development. It is not by chance that the PUSUDD lies here, this is an area in the city where nature is confronted with the most intense kind of built form. The built environment here was not made for people to live in, but it was infrastructure to keep the city running. In that perspective it is clear that no nature of green was needed here.

The building for the PUSUDD takes these two elements (nature and built form) and brings them together in synthesis, as it should go in good dialectic form.

The building is imposed on the site here, but it is set up for nature to have it’s go. Pillars in the water make that it becomes a calm corner of the Westhafen, so nature can go about building up soil and starting to grow wetlands. First underwater and eventually above water. At the same time there are wetlands on top of the roofs. Over time at the edges of the roof algae begin to gather and drip down. This way the built form and nature eventually merge into a synthesis for the future. Which is exactly the kind of examples that the PUSUDD would like to set for the urban context of Berlin.
